Rockland, Maine, USA - Breakwater Commons is a new, 68,000 square foot nursing facility with 96 licensed nursing care beds. This facility is made up of three resident neighborhoods: a skilled nursing neighborhood with 32 beds, a long-term care neighborhood with 32 beds and a memory care neighborhood with 32 beds. Each neighborhood also has common living and dining areas, a country kitchen, a nurse’s office and support spaces. The core of the community has an office, a physical therapy gym, a commercial kitchen, a salon, a spa and utility spaces.
Breakwater Commons alongside Gawron Turgeon Architects P.C. worked together to create a safe, warm and comfortable community for aging adults. Recognizing the crucial role of floors and walls in designing welcoming spaces for a senior living facility, Gawron Turgeon Architects P.C. specified Altro for this project.

Altro Aquarius was selected as the flooring for the spa rooms, European showers and resident room bathrooms. Safety of residents and staff is the number one priority when designing wet spaces and Altro Aquarius was selected because it has a lasting performance in wet and dry environments, shoes or barefoot. Additionally, in the resident bathrooms, a radiant heat mat system was installed above the concrete slab. Gawron Turgeon Architects P.C. coordinated with the heat mat company, Royal Flooring Company and Altro to ensure that they had the correct floor assembly. To provide the correct build up they had to depress the slab 1” and provide 3/8” coverage over the heat mat and under the Altro Aquarius flooring.
Altro Lavencia LVT was selected for the resident room flooring and provides a seamless transition to the Altro Aquarius flooring in the resident bathrooms. The 20-year warranty and 28 mil wear layer holds up perfectly in this setting and the wood look visual matches the aesthetic of the rest of the building. Altro Lavencia LVT is a stylish, low-maintenance flooring option that will last through its lifetime, even in areas with consistently heavy traffic.
For wall protection, Altro Puraguard was installed in the commercial kitchen, delivery corridor, soil rooms, commercial laundry rooms, janitorial rooms and medical rooms. This hygienic PVC wall cladding is highly impact-resistant and known to withstand damage normally caused by laundry carts, food carts and maintenance equipment. Also, its homogeneous construction camouflages superficial scratches, keeping the walls attractive long after their installation.
This brand-new facility opened its doors in July of 2023. With Altro floors and walls installed, Breakwater Commons can operate its facility knowing they have created a safe, stable, and durable foundation that can handle the needs of all their residents.
