Ohio, USA - Nestled in the suburb of Rocky River, Ohio—home to 20,000 residents and bordered by Lake Erie and the Cleveland Metroparks—Rocky River High School has built a reputation for excellence, earning the highest Performance Index score among all Ohio high schools in 2022 and 2023. This dedication to high standards extends beyond academics and into every aspect of the school’s facilities, including their commercial kitchen.
Originally designed in 1949, the school’s kitchen had remained largely untouched, using the same plans for over 70 years. Recognizing the need for a modern, functional space, ThenDesign Architecture set out to create a kitchen that would match Rocky River High School’s commitment to innovation and long-term planning.
Moving away from traditional quarry tile, and opting for more modern finishes, they selected Altro Stronghold 30 safety flooring and Altro Whiterock wall cladding to provide a seamless, hygienic solution.
Altro Stronghold 30 was chosen for its exceptional slip resistance, ensuring a safer environment for staff working in wet or greasy conditions. Its 3mm thickness eliminated the need for anti-fatigue mats by providing comfort underfoot and reducing noise. Altro Whiterock was recommended by the flooring contractor, Messina Floor Coverings, during installation. The school embraced the upgrade for its hygienic, impact-resistant surface, which eliminated the need for corner guards and bumpers while creating a clean, modern look. Thermoformed corners and heat-welded seems between the wall panels further enhanced hygiene and durability.
While Altro Puraguard remains our standard recommendation for commercial kitchens, Altro Whiterock offers an excellent solution for facilities requiring enhanced durability and hygiene, where budgets allow.
“The seamless integration of Altro Stronghold 30 and Altro Whiterock has transformed their kitchen into a safe, modern space,” said Jeanne Kleckner of ThenDesign Architecture. “Everyone was thrilled to move away from outdated materials and designs and have a solution that reflects our commitment to quality and longevity.”
The updated kitchen opened in late August 2024, giving staff and students access to a durable, hygienic space that will serve the school for decades to come. With its tankable, easy-to-clean surfaces and ability to withstand heavy use, the kitchen upgrade ensures Rocky River High School remains a step ahead in both design and functionality.
