Red Fish Healing Center in Coquitlam, British Columbia, is setting a new standard for mental health treatment and recovery. The 105-bedroom facility is a leading-edge center for mental health treatment and substance abuse and addiction, marking the first such facility in North America to provide these services under one roof.
With dignity of the patient front and center in the design, the $130 million rehabilitation hub is designed to treat those who are simultaneously experiencing the most severe and complex mental health crises and substance addictions.
Parkin Architects in Vancouver was chosen for the design project. When it came to designing the patient bathroom suites, they consulted Altro for a “tried-and-true” product that would be very durable and hold up well to the wear and tear in a mental health facility. They wanted to create some warmth and make the client bedroom ensuites a pleasant, soft tone that would minimize any institutional feel.
When selecting products, they chose Altro Aquarius because the product performed well and included a good range of neutrals that worked well with adjacent wood grain flooring. The firm selected 3,000 square yards of the color Curlew for the project.
“We’re all very pleased with how the project came out. Everyone who tours the facility is impressed. They’re all happy with how relaxed, soothing and welcoming the space feels.” Mary Chernoff, RID EDAC
