Altro Walkway 20 SD installation guide

Last edited:October 2016

Altro Walkway 20SD is a static dissipative safety flooring, 2mm in thickness, for use in all areas which require safety underfoot combined with resistance to build up of static charges.

Altro Walkway 20SD has a surface resistivity of 2 x 107ohms tested to EN 1081:1998.

There are many different standards for electrical resistance, which are being constantly reviewed. It is therefore important that you consult with your client as to which requirement they need to achieve, prior to specifying / installing the floor covering.

Altro Walkway 20SD should be installed following the same procedure as standard sheet, but the recommended conductive adhesives must be used (refer to the Altro adhesives guide).

Where a resistance to ground requirement has been specified, experience has shown that the use of conductive adhesive in conjunction with an earthing system improves the conductance of the flooring system. It is therefore recommended that to achieve these requirements, the Altro Walkway 20SD is installed onto an earthing system.

The first copper / brass strip (0.1mm thick), should be laid 150mm in from the perimeter of the room, running in the same direction as the sheet flooring. This strip should be connected to a known earth by a qualified electrician; two connections to earth are advised, the second as a backup in case the first is damaged or disconnected.

A second strip should be laid at 90° to the first; again this should be 150mm in from the edge of the room and running across the full width of the room. For large areas, extra strips should be laid at 20m intervals throughout the area.

Installation procedure

The subfloor must conform to the requirements of BS 8203:2001+A1:2009.

The subfloor should be smooth, flat, dry and free from dust, grease, paint, polish or any other contaminating agent. It should also have sufficient strength to withstand the forces which it is anticipated will be placed upon it during use.

The screed requires an efficient dpm when laid over floor slabs directly to the ground.

All floor structures, whether laid to ground or suspended should show a relative humidity of no more than 75% when measured by an Edney Hygrometer, using the method described in BS 8203:2001+A1:2009. All other systems can only be used as a guide.

Laying instructions

Altro Walkway 20SD should be laid in accordance with the Code of Practice BS 8203:2001+A1:2009.

The material can be straight laid and sealed with Altromastic™ 100, self-coved or hot welded to conventional set-in skirting. Self-coving and set-in skirtings should be adhered with a suitable contact adhesive. When self coving all mitres and joints within the coving should be hot welded.

Claims against warranty for colour, batch or obvious material defects will only be considered if the flooring has not yet been permanently bonded.

Adhesives

Conductive acrylic adhesive. For use on sand and cement screeds, latex or acrylic smoothing compounds and wood.

Conductive contact adhesive. For use on metal and other non absorbent surfaces.

Two part polyurethane conductive adhesive. For use in areas of spillage and on absorbent or non-absorbent surfaces.

Clarification of these recommendations should be sought from the manufacturers of these adhesives. The adhesive should be laid in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Excess adhesive should be removed with a cloth with a neutral detergent in the case of acrylic adhesive or with alcohol for two component adhesives. Removal of excess adhesive should be done as work progresses and whilst the adhesive is still wet.

Storage and laying temperature

Room temperature - minimum 14°C

Floor temperature - minimum 10°C

Hot welding

It is recommended that welding be carried out 24 hours after laying to give the adhesive time to harden so that the heat from the welding gun will not draw up the adhesive onto the grooved joint. All joints must be cut in, grooved and hot welded using the matching colour Altro Weldrod™ as detailed in the Altro safety flooring installation guidance sheet.

Maintenance

Sealers and polishes should not be used, as these will alter the electrical properties of the flooring. For general maintenance Altro Walkway 20SD should be cleaned with a neutral detergent. After cleaning, the floor must be rinsed thoroughly with clean water to remove all traces of the cleaning solution. Aggressive cleaning or the use of polishes and sealers should be avoided as this will affect the static dissipative properties. The use of some proprietary liquid detergents containing bactericidal additives can leave a film on the surface which can affect the electrical properties of the flooring. These must be avoided and are not recommended.
