Our sustainability journey/performance

Altro have been at the forefront of innovation for more than 100 years:

• We were the first manufacturer to produce ortho-phthalate-free safety floors.
• We invented adhesive-free safety flooring.
• We’ve been using a more renewable source of plasticisers since 2008 globally
• We are proud to have achieved zero waste to landfill at our Letchworth site since 2014
• Since 2000, we've reduced water consumption in our manufacturing process by a massive 99%.

We limit our carbon footprint by:

• Reducing waste production in all sites globally
• Sending zero waste to landfill from our Letchworth and Maiden Newton manufacturing facilities
• Recycling waste or recovering waste to energy
• Reducing packaging sizes across the Altro resins range
• Recycling the water we use in our Letchworth manufacturing site via a closed-circuit water-cooling system which reduces water consumption and minimises the likelihood of pollution
• Using universal (common) components and pack size for all epoxy products to reduce packaging, waste materials on-site and stock holding
• Using forms of electronic communications
• Only using FSC-sourced paper
• Sourcing our materials from local suppliers
• Replacing printed brochures with digital resources.

We are passionate about supporting the circular economy:

• Altro PVC-based products are 100% recyclable pre-installation
• PVC off-cuts can be recycled
• Altro adhesive-free floors are 100% recyclable post-consumer
• AltroSampleWise sample return program in North America
• Recycling scheme for sample cards at Letchworth site
• Altro safety flooring is wrapped using 100% recyclable packaging
• Cardboard and plastic packaging recycled from resin manufacturing sites
• Shredded paper generated from our resin manufacturing sites reused as packaging
• Used Altro resins Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) returned for re-use/recycling
• Used Altro resins metal containers compacted and recycled
• Altro Germany recycle products into stable mats for horses and capillary matting for plants

Altro use local recycling opportunities internationally. These include:

• Recofloor in the UK and NI, Australia and New Zealand
• Recowall in the UK
• Operating reverse logistics for Denmark, Spain and France
• Golv Atervinning in Sweden
• The Arbeitsgemeinschaft Pvc-Bodenbelag Recycling (AgPR) recycling facility in Germany

Sourcing materials ethically

• We always source materials from companies or suppliers who can demonstrate their environmental commitment
• Our safety floors and walls do not contain formaldehyde
• Altro adhesive-free floors are 100% recyclable post-consumer
• Our safety floors and walls do not contain lead, cadmium, mercury or hexavalent chromium
• We manufacture vinyl floors that are free from ortho-phthalate plasticisers
