At Altro, we’re committed to understanding why design for neurodiversity is gaining such traction and learning from those who are leading the charge to push the design community forward.
In October 2022 in Manchester, a diverse group gathered to discuss best practices and obstacles in inclusive design. One project manager left early, stating, “I’ve just realised that the project we’re about to sign off on has missed the point. I can see how we need to do it differently. If I leave now, I can fix it.” This moment highlights the urgent need for change and the growing awareness of the importance of inclusive design.
The event, which we hosted, was an early step in a collaborative passion project that has only gained momentum over the past three years. In November 2023, Joe Hurst, Altro’s Social Care Key Account Manager, joined forces with Stephanie Kyle and Maria Luigia Assirelli from Floyd Slaski Architects to meet with a major NHS Trust at Altro’s Letchworth HQ.
The group included senior members from the NHS Trust, including Heads of Mental Health and Capex Refurb Projects, Facilities Managers, and others—all coming together to have an open conversation about creating “places of safety” and improving the design of healthcare spaces.
As Stephanie Kyle from Floyd Slaski Architects points out, “People don’t design badly on purpose, they just don’t realise what they need to consider, and that changes if we change the architectural education system, which currently prioritises creative design over functional, accessible design, but you can absolutely have both.”
These discussions are vital in helping ensure that future spaces not only meet accessibility standards but also actively support neurodiverse individuals.
The conversation about inclusive design is no longer a niche topic—it's an urgent priority. The design community must continue to listen, adapt, and innovate to meet the needs of everyone, creating spaces that are truly welcoming and safe for all.
