Busways is Australia’s largest privately-owned bus company, with over 1350 buses in its fleet operating from 20 depots across New South Wales and South Australia. They employ 2,800 people, complete 53.7 million passenger journeys each year and cover over 62 million trip kilometres annually. A long-lasting, reliable floor is essential for the safety of their passengers, so they chose Altro.
To showcase the reliability of Altro flooring, an independent Australian testing company, Safe Environments, was commissioned to conduct the AS4663 test on a Busways vehicle that had been in operation since 2006. The test measures slip resistance of existing pedestrian surfaces. The Volgren Scania Bus had the original Altro Transflor Chroma flooring installed.
After sixteen years of use, 1.1 million kilometres travelled and around 400 passengers carried per day, the floor did exceptionally well. The AS4663 test was conducted, and the floor was still performing as well as it did from the start with an average slip resistance value (SRV) of 51 – or a very low potential for slip. Altro’s performance guarantee and longer lifespan mean less need to replace the flooring at the mid-cycle refreshes, significantly contributing to lower costs of refurbishments, less time off the road and perhaps most importantly, less requirement for disposal of the old flooring via landfill – aligning with sustainability charters of operators nationally.
Since this installation in 2006, the Altro Transflor Chroma range has been enhanced and is now known as Altro Transflor Chroma EV. The product has been reduced in weight by 20% and is even easier to clean, without any compromise on slip resistance or durability. Altro Transflor Chroma EV products are supported by the industry’s longest, most robust guarantees offering full coverage for 12 years.
