Celebrating creativity in healthcare design: the P23 moodboard celebration event

In the world of healthcare design, functionality and aesthetics must go hand in hand to create environments that promote healing and comfort. Recognising this, Altro recently spearheaded an innovative event, the P23 Moodboard Celebration, aimed at inspiring creativity among healthcare design specialists using the newly approved products under the NHS P23 Framework.

Unboxing Inspiration

To kickstart the event, Altro curated and dispatched a box of samples featuring products from five esteemed manufacturers, all part of the P23 Framework. These samples included:

  • Flooring: Altro
  • Walling: Altro
  • Paints: Crown Paints
  • Acoustic Panels: Ecophon
  • Furniture: Teal Furniture and Agua Fabrics

Each product was carefully selected to ensure compliance with healthcare standards, emphasising durability, hygiene, and safety.

The challenge: Crafting inspirational mood boards

The design specialists received a unique brief: to create mood boards for various hospital areas, such as dementia wards, reception areas, stroke units, and operating theatres. The challenge was to blend the products from different manufacturers into cohesive, inspirational designs. The goal was to demonstrate how these components could be used together to enhance the functionality and aesthetic appeal of healthcare spaces.

Capturing the creative process

Participants were encouraged to document their creative journey by photographing their mood boards. This process not only showcased their design skills but also provided a visual narrative of how they integrated the different materials. The completed mood boards, along with the photographs, were then sent back to Altro.

Professional presentation

Upon receiving the mood boards, Altro meticulously recreated them based on the designers’ photographs. These recreated boards were then professionally photographed, ensuring that every detail was captured with precision. The final step involved inputting these high-quality images into a digital mood board, creating an accessible and visually appealing portfolio of design ideas.

Celebrating creativity and innovation

The P23 Moodboard Celebration event was more than just a design challenge; it was a celebration of creativity and innovation in healthcare design. By bringing together products from multiple manufacturers, the event highlighted the versatility and potential of the P23 Framework components. It provided a platform for designers to experiment and showcase their ideas, ultimately contributing to the ongoing improvement of healthcare environments.

Altro’s P23 Moodboard Celebration event successfully demonstrated the power of collaborative creativity in healthcare design. It showcased how thoughtful integration of different products could result in environments that are not only functional but also visually inspiring. As healthcare design continues to evolve, such initiatives play a crucial role in pushing the boundaries and setting new standards for excellence.

Introduction Initial concepts for the Midwifery Department were to create a domestic environment, a typical ‘Home from home.’ within a holistic and mindful clinical space. To enhance the design, several Evidence Based Design principles, such as views out – natural and ambient lighting eCects - colour in material and furnishings and the artwork as a focus were used. To add to the resonance of the design, additional Biophilic plant concepts were incorporated in each space through the medium of colour, texture and illustration, in this instance, these plants have been shown to be beneficial when taken during pregnancy and labour.

The Floyd Slaski Architects’ moodboard presents a hospital staff wellbeing space, thoughtfully designed for nervous system regulation after emotionally challenging events, such as delivering difficult news or patient loss. This neurodiverse-inclusive space features varied atmospheric zones that provide opportunities for calm or gentle stimulation based on individual sensory needs. Inspired by a Crisis Café layout, it showcases how small spaces can support diverse responses to stress. The colour palettes are LRV-compliant and sensory-friendly, balancing calming tones with more stimulating hues to foster resilience and recovery. This design embodies a supportive, sensory-conscious environment for staff wellbeing in high-stress healthcare settings.
