Sciennes Primary School is a category B-listed historic building located in a conservation area, that received permission to build a new, two storey Passivhaus extension to house four additional classrooms. The extension sits within the existing school playground and is the first Passivhaus project for Edinburgh City Council. The groundbreaking project includes features such as thermally broken foundations, quadruple glazing and air source heat pumps. Passivhaus criteria relies on specification that includes sustainable, recyclable and biodegradable materials.
Altro adhesive-free floors were specified for this project for their carbon-saving, sustainable benefits. Scott McKenzie from CRM Flooring installed the Altro floors. “Altro Cantata adhesive-free and Altro XpressLay adhesive-free provided the perfect solution when an issue with a damp sub-floor at the new extension was encountered. The new build, concrete substrate, had not been allowed to fully dry before wooden timbers were overlaid, causing the wooden timbers to rot. As Altro adhesive-free floors could be taken up easily, rolled up, and stored – allowing the remedial building work to commence speedily – it shortened the project timescale, saved the client money by not having to purchase a replacement floor, and meant that any remaining damp would be able to dissipate easily. Relaying the floor only took a couple of hours for each area and since the work was completed, the school have had no further problems with a damp substrate.”
Altro Cantata adhesive-free was installed in the new classrooms and circulation areas, affording ease of maintenance with Altro Easyclean™ technology, keeping transference of noise to a minimum with 14dB impact noise reduction. Altro XpressLay adhesive-free was installed in the new classrooms and toilets, providing safety in the areas that were prone to a risk of slips from water spillages. Altro Walkway 20 SD was installed in the communications room, to minimise the risk of damage to the static-sensitive equipment.
Altro Cantata adhesive-free is a tonal and modernist, floor for maximum impact with minimum downtime. Enhanced cleanability makes it ideal for busy public spaces where disruption needs to be minimal, and it has no associated adhesive odours.
Altro XpressLay adhesive-free is a general-purpose safety flooring for where downtime is an issue and speed of installation critical.
