The design of The Engineering Heartspace, University of Sheffield, using:
Altro Orchestra, Altro Cantata, Altro Walkway 20 and
Altro XpressLay
Bond Bryan has achieved something really special here. The space features a quadruple height atrium with glass roof and spiral self-supporting staircase. It achieves an industrial look through the use of metal, glass and grey flooring – fitting for an engineering department - and yet it’s flooded with light and even hints of prettiness, for example, on the patterned staircase.
The minimalist effect is ideal for a busy space where people are passing through, socialising and working, opening it up and creating a perception of space. The new structure, which links two existing buildings, is a great example of Bauhaus-inspired design; an ideal balance of form and function. The overall effect is perfect for a university: inspiring.
